Capture Ruby Logger output for testing

Tag: ruby,logging,minitest

I have a ruby class like this:

require 'logger'
class T
  def do_something
    log = Logger.new(STDERR)
    log.info("Here is an info message")
  end
end

And a test script line this:

#!/usr/bin/env ruby

gem "minitest"
require 'minitest/autorun'

require_relative 't'

class TestMailProcessorClasses < Minitest::Test
  def test_it
    me = T.new

    out, err = capture_io do
      me.do_something
    end

    puts "Out is '#{out}'"
    puts "err is '#{err}'"
  end
end

When I run this test, both out and err are empty strings. I see the message printed on stderr (on the terminal). Is there a way to make Logger and capture_io to place nicely together?

I'm in a straight Ruby environment, not Ruby on Rails.

Best How To :

The magic is to use capture_subprocess_io

 out, err = capture_subprocess_io do
     do_stuff
 end

Map with accumulator on an array

ruby,inject

This operation is called scan or prefix_sum, but unfortunately, there is no implementation in the Ruby core library or standard libraries. However, your intuition is correct: you can implement it using Enumerable#inject. RSpec test for rake task

ruby-on-rails,ruby,rspec,rake-task

A couple things. First off, you should put created_at in the create method: user.items.create(description: "Old Item", created_at: 12.days.ago). Second, you need to call user.reload in order for the changes from your rake task to be available. So it should look like this: user.reload expect(user.items.count).to eq 1 etc...

Java.util.logger new file every day

Java.util.logging does not support rotating on a daily basis, see this bug report: http://bugs.java.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6350749 Alternatively, you could use logback, log4j or log4j2 and slf4j to tunnel JUL (see http://www.slf4j.org/legacy.html#jul-to-slf4j). All of the mentioned frameworks support date-based file rotation. HTH, Mark...

Keep leading zeroes when converting string to integer

Short answer: no, you cant. 2.1.5 :001 > 0001 => 1 0001 doesn't make sense at all as Integer. In the Integer world, 0001 is exactly as 1. Moreover, the number of leading integer is generally irrelevant, unless you need to pad some integer for displaying, but in this case...
